You found a strain you love. It smells incredible. Three weeks later, it’s dry, dusty and tastes like hay. Sound familiar? Cannabis doesn’t spoil like milk, but it does fade, and a few easy habits can keep it tasting fresh for much longer.
Meet the four freshness thieves
- Light: sunlight breaks down cannabinoids and terpenes. It’s the fastest way to dull a strain.
- Heat: warmth makes terpenes evaporate, taking the aroma with them.
- Air: oxygen slowly turns THC into CBN and dries everything out.
- Humidity: too dry and flower gets crumbly and harsh. Too damp and mould moves in.
Flower: think “wine cellar”
- Use an airtight glass jar. Glass doesn’t hold smells or add any. Pick a size your flower fills most of the way, so there’s less air inside.
- Find a cool, dark spot. A cupboard or drawer is perfect. The top of the fridge, a sunny shelf or the car are not.
- Skip the fridge and freezer. Temperature swings cause condensation, and cold makes the trichomes brittle so they snap off.
- Try a humidity pack. Those little two-way packs keep flower in the sweet spot. Cheap, easy, and a big upgrade.
Edibles
Follow the package’s storage instructions and best-before date. Chocolate and gummies hate warm rooms.
Concentrates and vape carts
Cool and dark again. Keep concentrates sealed, and store vape carts standing upright so the oil stays where it should.
Try this: the jar check
Once a week, open your jar and take a sniff. If the aroma is getting faint, the flower’s drying out: drop in a humidity pack. If it smells musty or grassy, take a close look for any fuzzy spots.
Keep it out of reach
Store everything in its child-resistant packaging, in a locked box or high cupboard, away from kids and pets. Edibles especially can look just like regular treats.
